Pressure-Practice Problem

June 22nd, 2009 admin

Pressure

-Pressure = force/ area
-Force push or pull that that causes a change in motion of an object.
-Force = mass (X) acceleration due to gravity (9.81 M/S2)
-Area: length (X) width
-Measured in square meters (M2)

Practice problem

1)If I have a bag of potatoes that weighs 5kg, how much pressure is being exerted on my hand when I hold it? (Area is 8 CM2)

-5KG / 0.08m2 = 62.5 KG/m2
-5KG X 9.806= 49.03 —–>
-49.03N / 0.08M2= 612.875

Pressure change with depth

-Static pressure: force exerted by fluid on an object even if the fluid is not moving.
-Flow pressure: pressure that causes motion because the fluid is moving
-Pressure change with temperature
-Particle theory of mater suggests that particles move faster when they are heated(They gain energy).
-When a fluid is heated the molecules spread apart and exert more pressure on the container

Changing pressure

-Increase force: Increases pressure
-Decrease area: increases pressure
-Closer we get to earth the more particles are on top of us therefore MORE FORCE
Squeezing is an example of increasing pressure by increasing the force
-The definition for Barometer is that thing to tell you how much pressure you are under.
-I am under 30.57144 N/pa of pressure
