The Hippo eats mostly grass and some water plants. Hippos eat at night and spends all day in the water.
Habitat Of The Hippo
The Hippo lives mainly in South Africa and has become extinct in North Africa. In some areas of South Africa the Hippo has become over populated. Hippos live in fresh water rivers and streams. Humans and Hippos have started to compete for the same territory.
How Much Can a Hippo Weigh?
A full grown Hippo can weigh up to 4 tones and can grow up to 4 meters in length. It also stands 1.4 meters tall. Even though a Hippo weighs 4 tones it only eats 1 percent of it body weight every night compared to some cows that eat 2 percent of their weight every day.
Information On Hippos
The Hippo is one for the most dangerous mammals. The Hippo has canine teeth that can grow up to 20 inches. Its canine teeth are mostly used for defence. The Hippo has the ability to kill a human. Its jaw is strong enough to bite a person in half.
Baby Hippos
Baby Hippos are born underwater and begin to swim almost immediately. The mother Hippo is a great mom. She looks after her offspring and will even take care of other baby Hippos.
Future
The future of the Hippo is not clear. Humans have moved into their habitat. They use the water for farming and industry polluting their environment. Also the Hippo has become a food source for Eastern Africa. Humans need to change how they interact with wild animals or the Hippos could become extinct.
